St. Valentine’s Gay Agenda

Out of 5000 people surveyed, here’s how folks identified: 23% identified as lesbian, 26% as bi+, 14% as trans*, 12% as queer, 11% as gay, and 14% as other, including responses such as Pansexual, Omnisexual, Demisexual, and more.

We noticed something interesting in our survey responses: many users shared Valentine’s Day memories and traditions, often highlighting their connections with family, especially their mothers. From exchanging flowers and cards as kids to celebrating today, it’s clear that the queer community has a special love for their moms. While some participants shared heartwarming traditions and memories, 17% expressed negative sentiments or indicated not having any fond memories associated with the holiday. Valentine’s Day, often viewed as a commercialized celebration geared toward straight cis couples, can evoke mixed emotions within the LGBTQ+ community, and our survey from last year highlighted the depressing effect this holiday can have on the community with the oversaturation of love-themed displays.

“I haven’t really celebrated the day with any of my partners because it’s a very straight holiday by now, But I like funny V-cards that some businesses or artists make,” – said one of our users

Participants generally expressed the importance of diverse representations of LGBTQ+ love and relationships in media, with ratings ranging from 1 to 10. However, 23% of respondents indicated feeling inadequately represented and expressed a desire for more inclusive portrayals, particularly highlighting the need for more representation of trans individuals and diverse relationship dynamics such as polyamory. To satisfy their request, we prepared a guide on celebrating St. Valentine’s Day with your polycule, including a list of gifts.

Valentine’s Day Plans responses varied significantly, with 29% planning romantic dates, 42% opting for self-love days, and 20% enjoying quality time with friends. Notably, 9% of respondents expressed feelings of loneliness or not having plans.

Our relationship expert Angelika Koch provided advice on how to have a proper self-love day on February 14th without feeling like you are missing something:

Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to give yourself a day of self-love and care. Taking this day to do this, can be beneficial for your mental health and wellbeing. Everyone’s self-care day will look different. For some, having a day of being curled up on the couch and reading a book sounds like a heavenly treat. For others, having a more adventurous day of being outdoors and hiking would help you feel grounded and allow you to appreciate the beauty in nature in a way that you may have been too busy to do in recent months. Then, there are people who prefer to slow things down with more of a spa day. This could consist of a warm bath, a facial, or a massage. You can also prepare all of your favorite foods in advance and snack on them throughout the day. When deciding on how to spend your self-care day, it’s important to center your activities on what would be best for your mental health.”

Overall, St. Valentine’s Day should be a celebration of love in any shape and form and this is what we all can agree with.

“Valentine’s Day for me is about being able to show someone how much they mean to me even more and go all out” – summarized another Taimi user and we can’t agree more.
