Understanding The Term Genderflux

In recent years, various terms have emerged to describe the way that different people experience and perceive their own gender. This is a positive development as increasing our vocabulary around gender identity and gender expression leads to better understanding. You may have seen the term genderflux or know someone who describes themselves this way. If you aren’t sure what that means, or you wonder if you may be a genderflux person, this article was written for you.

What is The Genderflux Gender Identity

Genderflux refers to people who are fluid in their gender identity in terms of how much they resonate with a particular gender identity category. It may think of it as the intensity of your gender self-perception changing over time. For some, genderflux involves experiencing alignment with the entire spectrum of genders. Others may only align with a traditionally male or female identity – or other gender identity.

Genderflux Subcategories

There are some subcategories that genderflux person may align with. This is why some consider genderflux to be an umbrella term. These are:

  • Agenderflux – Intensity varies between identifying with agender or another identity
  • Boyflux – Intensity fluctuates between agender and a male gender
  • Girlflux – Intensity fluctuates between agender and a female gender
  • Enbyflux – Intensity fluctuates between being agender and a non-binary gender
  • Pangenderflux – Intensity fluctuates across a spectrum of genders

Differences Between Genderfluid And Genderflux

Are genderflux and genderfluid the same? That’s a complex question to address. One somewhat popular analogy is light switches vs. dimmer switches. While both genderflux and genderfluid people may experience identifying with multiple genders, the way they have those experiences is different. Think of genderflux as a dimmer switch. The light can be off (agender), dim (some alignment with a particular gender), or bright (strong alignment). Meanwhile, people w are gender fluid experience gender more like a light switch. Another key difference is that a genderfluid person may move between genders, but someone who is genderflux often identifies within a single gender category – just with fluctuating intensity.

Having said all that, not all genderflux individuals are the same. Like other gender identities, genderflux is self assigned, just like gender fluid. Two people may have similar experiences and feelings about their identity, with one embracing the term gender fluid and the other genderflux. It’s important to respect the way that each person sees themselves rather than applying labels we prefer.

The Genderflux Flag

Genderqueer communities have embraced many different flags to symbolize their identities and experiences. There are a few variations of the genderflux flag. One contains five horizontal stripes. They are pink, white, blue, and lavender for the spectrum of genders. Finally, a gray stripe that means without or agender.

Other genderflux flags and symbols have been created by users on platforms like Tumblr and Deviant Art. This includes a constellation genderflux flag.
