Respectful Communication

When it comes to safe sex practices one of the most important things to consider is communication. After all, it’s always good to know exactly who your partner is and for your partner to know exactly who you are. Do either of you have any potential diseases that need to be considered when it comes to sex? What are your preferences in bed? Is there anything that you aren’t willing to do in bed? Are you going to remain exclusive to each other or are you planning to be open about your sex life? All of these questions are important as they give you and your partner a mutual understanding of one another. But questions aren’t just the only form of respectful communication, in fact, most of the time in regards to sex communication begins with gaining consent from each other. After all gaining consent is quite possibly the most important and basic form of respect in reference to sex. Just remember to gain consent, ask questions, and make a plan in order to ensure that you and any of your partners are safe and healthy during this intimate moment.

Soap

Of course, a great soap is amazing if you have a chance to take a quick shower or “bird bath” before the action starts. You’ll feel clean and comfortable. That’s a great confidence booster. However, that’s not all. Bring along a body-safe, antibacterial soap. Use it to clean any toys you use, and to wash down after the act.

Don’t worry, things don’t have to be awkward. You can even add taking a shower together to your foreplay routine.

Lubricant

Lubricant is quite possibly one of the most important tools for anyone's sex kit. A small bottle of lube can cost as little as $2 and can essentially make an uncomfortable or even painful experience into a pleasurable one. Of course, it can be worthwhile to buy a high-end silicone lube or something that warms up.

Whether you feel like you need it or not lubricant is a necessity during sex, if not for you at least for your partner. Whether the plan is to use it for toys or if the plan is to use it in order to make intercourse more satisfying. Lubricant is just a basic necessity that should be in everyone's sex kit. It can also help prevent condoms from tearing.

Dental Dam

A dental dam is a thin sheet of latex that is meant to be placed over the vaginal area or anus. This piece of latex essentially creates a protective barrier between the giver and receiver during oral sex.

Dental dams are commonly used during the practice of oral sex and is used to prevent either person from receiving an infection or STI from one another. After all when dealing with any form of genitalia there is always the risk of contracting communicable diseases such as herpes or chlamydia.

Human mouths are also prone to carrying bacteria and therefore need to be kept cleaned and contained during sexual intercourse. While brushing ones teeth can definitely help to keep those germs at bay it is best to practice safe sex measures by keeping a stock of dental dams along with all of your other protective items. This way you can ensure that both you and your partner are kept safe and healthy during the act of oral sex.

Latex Gloves

Latex is a popular and necessary part of a safe sex kit, but if you are allergic there is no need to fret, there are plenty of other options other than latex, you just have to take a moment to really look for them. Gloves are especially important when it comes to sex as you will likely use your hands a lot during the first sessions of foreplay.

This is why it’s so important to make sure that you wash your hands well before sexual intercourse as well as make sure to wear a pair of good quality, powder-free gloves that fit your hands just right. If the gloves are too small they will likely be prone to ripping or breaking during the act of foreplay. If they are too large they may feel uncomfortable or even prove to be ineffective. Powder is also out, remember that the genitals are sensitive organs that can become easily infected if the wrong substance comes into contact with them. This is why you never use a sugar scrub, powdered gloves, or other particular items around the area.

External Condom

Whether you have a penis or a vagina if you plan to have sex with different types of people it always pays to be prepared. External condoms are essentially one of the most basic and well known forms of sexual protection. Many people use them for a variety of reasons as well. Some may use them in order to keep their toys clean, while others may use them in order to prevent the spread of STD’s or pregnancy. It is also important to make sure that you have a variety of sizes and types as well. While one would hope that their partner would also be well prepared it is essential for safe sex practices to keep some on hand just in case. It is also good to remember to have a variety of sizes in order to ensure that you are capable of having safe sex. After all, not everyone is going to fit into a Magnum XL just like not everyone is going to be able to fit into a Trojan medium. Just remember that condoms are only truly effective if they fit the user and are worn correctly.

Internal Condom

While less well known as its external counterpart, internal or vaginal condoms essentially serve the same purpose and are great to have as an extra layer of protection. After all, while they tend to be the most common form of sexual protection condoms aren’t always as effective as one would hope they would be. If worn and used correctly external condoms have an effectiveness level of about 98%. The two percent where it is ineffective is usually because of certain defects such as the condom breaking during intercourse, or there is the occasional microscopic tear in the latex. After all, it doesn’t take much for semen to escape. By using internal condoms you essentially double your protection during the act of intercourse and ensure that you are more capable of practicing sex in a safe and healthy manner.
