The Girl King

The Girl King, based on the story of Kristina of Sweden, is a movie about a six-year-old girl who got crowned at the age of six. At such a young age, the girl king of the story is forced to take on a lot of responsibility in a time when society was a lot more conservative, especially towards a girl.

In the time period the Girl King grew up in, lesbian love was not tolerated. Being in a lesbian relationship herself, she had to constantly fight the conservatives in order to modernize Sweden and accept her female lover.


Starring Rachel Weiz and Rachel McAdams, Disobedience is a movie about a young woman who decided to return to her religiously secluded community after her father's death. There, she reconnects with a childhood friend she once had feelings for, and the two women start a forbidden romance.

While this is certainly not a light-hearted lesbian movie, it is one you can easily relate to and the two lead women truly have amazing chemistry.

Booksmart is a film about two best friends who have spent the last four years of high school focusing on getting good grades and reaching their academic goals. On the eve of their high-school graduation, they decide to go on a crazy adventure in order to make up for the lost time during these four years in one night.

This might not be one of the fully lesbian movies per se, one of the main characters explores her sexuality through this fun experience of making up for the lost time due to school in one night and has a coming-out moment which is followed by her exploring her love interests and sexuality.

Ammonite is loosely following the events of paleontologist Mary Anning's life, who is played by Kate Winslet. In this film, Mary Anning is asked by a rich husband to allow his wife to follow her work as a means to treat her melancholia.

His wife, played by Saoirse Roman, and Mary end up falling in love and the movie explores how their relationships progress. Another plus is the appearance of real-life lesbian actress Fiona Shaw.

Fun Fact: Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan actually put together the sex scenes by themselves for this film. In Winslet's words " Women know what women want" and this just lets you know how high the standards were, even though their budget was low.

Carmen and Lola

Carmen and Lola is a Spanish movie about two young girls who are living in a Romani community in the suburbs of Madrid. Carmen is destined to live the life of every other woman in her circle; get married, have many children, and take care of her family. This is not the life Carmen dreams of.

Soon, she meets a girl called Lola, who might be part of the same community but dreams of going to college and living a different, more fulfilling life. Lola helps Carmen explore her sexuality and the two girls will have to decide whether they want to lead their own lives outside of their community.

Tru Love

Tru is a young lesbian that unexpectedly starts a romantic relationship with her friend's mother named Alice. Alice is much older and has lived a completely different life so far.

The two women feel a very strong connection and enjoy being with each other, but things become complicated when Tru's friend learns about the relationship and warns Tru to stay away from her mother. This is a great movie about lesbian dating at different points in women's lives.

Princess Cyd

Princess Cyd is a film that focuses on a young woman called Cyd who decides to visit her writer aunt Miranda for the summer. During her stay in Chicago, she meets Katy, a girl working in a coffee shop and the two start developing feelings for each other.

While it's not a comedy, Princess Cyd has a funny way of showing how Cyd explores her gay side through her lovely interactions with her aunt and other friends she makes during her stay. Princess Cyd is an entertaining and interesting watch that is perfect for all ages and will be especially relatable with the younger crowd.

Vita & Virginia

Vita and Virginia is a film based on the life of Virginia Woolf. The film takes place in 1920s London, where Virginia Woolf meets fellow author Vita Sackville-West and while both women are married, a lesbian romance sparks between them.

This affair motivated Virginia to, later on, write a novel based on the things they experienced. While this movie stays true to the real-life events that follow Virginia, it has a bittersweet ending that might make you feel like it wasn't all that you hoped for.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a French film that takes place in 1770 France. Marianne, a portrait painter, is commissioned to create the wedding portrait of Héloïse. Her mother asks Marianne to do the wedding portrait in secret as the portrait needs to be sent to a possible groom in Milan.

Marianne is presented to Héloïse as a companion for her walks, and she is to study her and paint her in secret. As the two women get to know each other better, a romance sparks. While Portrait of a lady on fire is not your typical romantic movie, it has a very unexpected ending and the acting truly makes it a movie worth watching.

Joey is a woman from a small town, who is trying to find her way. In her search for direction, she decides to visit an Army recruiting office, hoping that joining the Army will give her some form of purpose and help her escape her small-town life.

Something she doesn't expect though is meeting Rayna, who is married and has two little children. Despite that fact, the two women fall in love but have to keep it a secret from the world. This lesbian film doesn't have the happy ending you would expect, so keep that in mind in case you decide to watch this before any of the other recommended lesbian movies.

All About E

All About E revolves around the tale of E, a famous lesbian DJ, and her gay bestie as they unexpectedly come across a big amount of money left behind in a taxi they rode home. Upon realizing who the money might belong to, they decide to run and ask for people to help them hide.

This leads them to the Australian outback where a woman she used to be in a relationship with lives. While they try to solve the issues of their past, E's best friend urges them to do so if they love each other. This is one of the movies streaming on Hulu with an intense and interesting plot where lesbian love is still at the forefront.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is based on a novel with the same name and it follows Cameron, a teenager who just got caught in the backseat of her car with her school's prom queen. Her parents decide it is best to send her to a gay conversion therapy center to help cure her of this problem.

There, Cameron develops a friendship with some of her fellow residents and they share their struggles and ideas while waiting to get released. This movie paints a picture of the way teenagers view their sexuality and identity. It has received a lot of amazing ratings and it is a movie you will enjoy watching.

The World to Come

The World to Come is taking place in 19th century New York, following the tale of two women who are married in heterosexual marriages, who are unhappy with their relationship with their husbands and the situation in their marriages.

Soon after meeting each other, they become close friends and it doesn't take long until this friendship develops into something more. You get to watch them fall for one another and explore their new sexuality in a time when many women were trapped in unhappy marriages.

Desert Hearts

While one of the older additions to this list, Desert Hearts has been one of the best classic queer movies since it came out in 1958. It tells the tale of a New York University professor who is awaiting a divorce from her husband.

During this time, she starts a romantic relationship with another woman, and this relationship allows her to rediscover herself and become a better, happier, and more confident version of her past self. Desert Hearts was also based on a novel and most importantly features a very happy ending!


Adam is one of the lesbian movies based on a book, more specifically the one from Ariel Schrag. While that book included some offensive remarks, the film was an adaptation that ended up being much needed. The base storyline follows a cis guy that just visited his queer sister for the summer holidays and is mistaken as trans.

One of the best things is that the film includes a relationship between a trans and a cis woman, something that is not often presented in movies, therefore making it important to watch. Leo Shang, who played in the "L word", also co-stars in the cast.

Happiest Season

If you love Kristen Stewart, the Happiest Season is one of the lesbian movies you should not miss. Taking place in the holiday season, Abby (played by Kristen Stewart) is planning on proposing to her girlfriend Harper (played by Mackenzie Davis) during Harper's family's annual holiday party.

The problem is that Harper still hasn't come out to her folks. Happiest Season is a drama-free film that incorporates a more cheerful and relatable outlook because of the coming-out scenes that are included. It is a must-watch for the holiday season and a great lesbian movie to watch on a movie date.

Liz in September

Liz in September is a Venezuelan drama romance film that revolves around the womanizer days of Liz, who loves to spend each of her birthdays at a Caribbean beach resort. There, Liz meets a special lady who lost her son due to cancer.

Their connection might just be what will make Liz quit her womanizing days. Liz in September left quite a few fans unhappy with its ending though so you might want to leave it for a later watch option.

Wild Nights with Emily

Wild Nights with Emily is a romantic comedy that features the real-life events of Emily Dickson (played by Molly Shannon) and her love for Susan Gilbert.
