Happy International Pronouns Day! Today marks the day when we all should remind the world that pronouns MATTER — and why they do.
Pronouns are obviously an integral part of our daily language. We cannot avoid using them — since they help us identify or refer to someone or something. Gender-neutral pronouns are unspecific to one gender, and by using them you do not label or associate a person with a specific gender. This is especially important for people who don’t identify with the gender assigned to them at birth.
It is also critical to remember that sex does not determine someone’s gender. Rather than assume someone’s pronouns based on their perceived gender or appearance, it’s appropriate to ask what their pronouns are.
We still live in a world where the majority of people assume a person’s gender based on the binary idea of masculinity and femininity. Gender, however, is not a binary concept — and by assuming one’s gender, people ignore the complexity of one’s identity and fail to respect it.
According to the TREVOR Project survey, non-binary and trans youth who reported having their pronouns respected by all or most of the people in their lives attempted suicide at half the rate of those who did not.
As the biggest LGBTQ+ platform, we understand that it is important to respect everyone in the LGBTQ+ community. Taimi features the widest variety of settings among other apps that help identify people the way they see fit — making us the most inclusive social network for LGBTQ+ folks.
Referring to people by their pronouns helps raise awareness and solidarity. By asking and respecting one’s pronouns, we can transform society’s attitude and celebrate people’s diverse identities. Let’s hope all stay aware of the complexity that is gender and stay respectful when addressing someone by the pronouns.
Taimi is free to download. Taimi Premium subscription provides access to features unavailable or limited in the free version of the app.
